The days passed slowly.

I was not the only one who felt restless. Ryon sat on a parapet high on the outer wall, sharpening his twin dragon-wing daggers far beyond necessary. Jaxon and Harry sparred with short swords in the practice courtyard, the Warrior giving the Ranger pointers on the best method of deflecting a beetle slash. Maze was nowhere to be seen during the day, although he was undoubtedly fiddling with gears and steam cranks in a workshop within the city. At night we ate supper together, our mutual restlessness accentuated and amplified by the Dragon bond.

Instructing Alyssa was one of the few pleasures of my day. She was stubborn the way all good runetracers were: she refused to give up until she had mastered whatever drill I gave, whether standing on her toes or tracing upside-down with her feet against a wall. She cracked jokes, grinning widely whenever she saw me smiling in return. She told me that even if she never mastered runetracing from a galloping horse, she would crack my cold exterior.

And then, at night, she found Jax’s bed, or he found hers. And the geyser of love and lust and comfort that poured through the bond—through both of their bonds—left me feeling jealous and alone.

On the fourth day, Jax strode into the runetracing courtyard. Alyssa was sprinting back and forth while tracing her trailblaze spell; she was already adept at tracing it while at a light jog, but such a spell was only truly valuable if you could trace it while running for your life from pursuers. Jax approached me while watching Alyssa’s long strides. A sheen of sweat covered his face, and his light shirt was stuck to his chest with moisture.

“Is she improving?” he asked.

I nodded. “It may not appear so, but she is. See the small flames licking across the ground behind her? Two hours ago, she could trace nothing at this speed.”

“At least one of us is getting something out of this delay,” he muttered.

“Have you any news in that regard?”

“None at all,” he admitted bitterly. “Tyronix will say nothing beyond vague comments about the Archon’s larger strategy. But I can sense his growing concern about the war. It goes poorly, especially in the east.”

“The east?” I asked. “I thought we were holding ground there.”

“Three days ago, that was true. Now?” Jax shrugged his huge shoulders. “From what I’ve heard through other sources, the Hivemind has reached the foothills of the Dragonspine Mountains.”

An image flashed in my head: galloping along a narrow mountain ridge, desperate to reach a peak where explosives had been housed. Alyssa falling to the ground, crying out for help. Beetles and drillers moving in from all sides, cutting off any escape. It could be the Dragonspine Mountains. Or it could be a thousand other places.

“Perhaps the strategy is to fall back to those mountain passes, where the Silithik can be funneled into narrow valleys to fight,” I said.

“Perhaps,” Jax said, although his tone indicated he didn’t believe it was likely.
